Wise Fees for India Transfers: How to Read and Compare a Quote

Understand a Wise India transfer quote, compare payment methods, and calculate how fees and exchange rates affect the rupees your recipient receives.

Wise does not charge one fixed fee for every transfer to India. Your amount, currencies and payment method determine the price. To find your cost, enter your transfer details and compare the total you pay with the INR your recipient receives. Wise explains the pricing factors in its guide to transfer fees.

This guide covers sending foreign currency to India. If you are sending rupees abroad, you need the rules and pricing for that separate route.

What to look for in the quote

Quote detail What to check
Total payment How much will leave your bank account or card, including the displayed fee?
Transfer fee Is it included in the amount you entered or added to it?
Exchange rate How many rupees will each unit of the converted currency buy?
Recipient amount Does the final INR amount meet your recipient’s needs?
Arrival estimate Will that payment method meet your deadline?

Wise says it uses the mid-market exchange rate and charges a separate transfer fee. Its fee percentage depends on the currency, with a minimum charge for small transfers. A rate without a markup still does not make the transfer free. See Wise’s fee explanation.

A worked example: why a zero fee can still cost more

Illustration only: these are invented figures, not current Wise or competitor quotes. Assume a $1,000 total budget, fees deducted before conversion, bank deposit in India, and no additional charges.

Calculation Example A Example B
Total paid $1,000 $1,000
Fee deducted $7 $0
Amount converted $993 $1,000
Example USD/INR rate ₹90.00 ₹89.20
Recipient receives ₹89,370 ₹89,200

Example A delivers ₹170 more despite charging a visible fee. The calculation is (total budget − fee) × exchange rate. Use that formula only when the fee is deducted from the budget; a calculator that adds its fee on top needs a different total-payment comparison.

If your recipient needs exactly ₹90,000, reverse the exercise: enter that recipient amount in each calculator and compare the total dollars required. Do not compare a $1,000 payment with a $1,007 payment as if the budgets were equal.

Does paying by card change the cost?

Change the payment method while keeping the amount and recipient details fixed. Wise displays the available options and their charges during setup. Its card guidance says credit and business cards cost more to process; a card issued outside the payment currency’s country can also attract a higher fee, subject to exceptions. See Wise’s card payment rules.

Also check your own bank or card issuer’s tariff. If it charges you separately, add that amount to your comparison. The provider’s calculator cannot replace checking your funding account’s terms.

How to compare your next transfer

  1. Open the Wise US-to-India calculator, or select your actual sending country on Wise.
  2. Enter your budget and choose the recipient’s delivery method.
  3. Record the fee, exchange rate, final INR amount and expected arrival for each available funding option.
  4. Obtain a second provider’s quote using the same budget and delivery method at approximately the same time.
  5. Separate any first-transfer promotion from the price you would pay for later transfers.

Keep a dated copy of the quote if you want to compare it with a future payment. A result for one amount and method does not establish which provider is cheapest for every transfer.

Questions about India transfer fees

Can I use a fee from another country’s guide?

Use a quote for your actual sending currency and country. Payment methods vary by origin, so a US example is not a GBP, CAD or AED price list. Wise’s pricing guide explains that dependency.

Will a referral offer remove every charge?

Check the discount in your own quote. Our Wise promo and referral guide explains voucher limits and costs that may remain.

Where can I compare Wise with Remitly?

Use the Wise vs Remitly for India comparison. It separates payout options and introductory pricing from the amount your recipient actually gets.
